"The
Way Home" (1997)...In terms of sheer technique,
all of the aforementioned acoustic guitarists Liebert included * pale
in the shadow of Colombian born Juan Carlos Quintero, who re-emerges
from a five year label limbo with a vibrant tour of his homeland, appropriately
titled The Way Home. Whereas 1992's popular Through The Winds found
him compromising his potent improvisational chops and strong composing
skills in a setting where the electonics dominated, this time the many
Latin grooves emerge more organically - from the effortless interaction
with his longtime ensemble featuring pianist Joe Rotondi and bassist
Eddie Resto, a host of all-star percussionists, as well as a love for
Latin folkloric music. He doesn't need any classical references and
orchestral swells to create drama. Quintero can do the radio friendly
pop-flamenco thing as well as anyone, loping along casually on the tropical
flavored cruise "El Pueblo," but unlike Liebert, challenges
himself and Rotondi to jet off course and toss off a couple of be-bop
licks. More in character with Quintero's potential, however, are more
polyrhythmic hybrid excursions like "Hermanos," which fuses
fast and rumbling flamenco runs with folksy, twangy Country and Western
sensibilities, and the irrepressible, bongo-happy quartet piece, "Little
Indians," which perfectly blends straight ahead and pop flamenco
flavors. Quintero also has a blast venturing into odd-metered, avante
garde territory on the jumpy closer, "Porque Si." featuring: percussionists/Munyungo Jackson, Walter Rodriguez, Tiki Pasillas, Angel Figueroa, Ron Powell, bassists/Eddie Resto, Alec Milstein, pianist/Joe Rotondi. recorded by dan garcia, mixed by dan garcia, mastered by doug sax/the mastering lab Tracks... 1.

"Through The Winds" (1992)...established jcq's commitment as a world music recording artist while positioning his rising star as a multi-talented purveyor of the world beat sound. Colombian born Juan Carlos Quintero, whose self titled 1990 debut was the perfect blend of jazz sensbilities and Latin rhythms, delves evern futher into the global music realm with the polyrhythmic textures of Through The Winds. The collection features the amazing musical partnership of Quintero and composer/producer/arranger Todd Cochran, whose experience with Latin jazz merges perfectly with the guitarist's natural born sensibilities. Cochran's composition "The Magic Ring" and Quintero's "After the Rain" set the tone of the album, beginning with easygoing, lilting grooves before heating up into flamenco styled jams highlighted by wild percussion sections. Quintero's roots come to glorious life on the celebratory "Festival," a tribute to his homeland featuring a brilliant texturing of classical guitar, cumbia rhythms and exotic soundscaping, "En Tunja" and the Caribbean flavored, highly improvised "Island Dance." featuring: percussionists/Munyungo Jackson, Walfredo Reyes Jr., Kevin Ricard, Angel Figueroa, bassists/Alec Milstein, James Leary, pianists/Otmaro Ruiz, Todd Cochran, drummers/Clayton Cameron, Bob Harsen. featuring co-composers/Todd Cochran, Dan Stein, Joel Goodman, Alec Milstein. recorded & mixed by Todd Cochran, mastered by Bernie Grundman Tracks... 1

The new volume in the COLORS Sounds series, dedicated to Colombia's own sound, Cumbia, is ready to be released by IRMA RECORDS/Italy. A Europe release (available in ther USA as an import), "Colors/Cumbia" features JCQ along with Cumbia all-stars artists such as Celso Pi–a, King Chango, Se–or Coconut, Sonora Dinamita, & Gonzalo Martinez. COLORS MUSIC presents: Various Artists - CUMBIA Cat. No. 512198-2 (CD) / 512198-1 (2LP) Irmagroup ----------------COLORS MUSIC ALL THE COLORS OF MUSIC- The second release is dedicated to Cumbia, Latin AmericaÕs hottest musical phenomenon Music as an expression of the WorldÕs different cultures: the second CD of the series Colors Music: Cumbia immediately hits you with hybrid and contaminated sounds from the Atlantic coast of Colombia. An ensemble of African rhythms and European melodic structures, over the centuries, Cumbia has become the fruit of the constant influences of the inhabitants of Colombian port cities - important stops in maritime commerce. This constant exposure to musical forms so different from each other, from Caribbean to African, from rumba to Argentinean tango, has progressively influenced Colombian Cumbia. However the style has managed to maintain its irresistible upbeat rhythm that distinguishes it from the rest of Latin American music. Cumbia is closer to the tenacious rhythms of rock-steady and Jamaican reggae than it is to salsa and Afro-Cuban music. Cumbia has never been a genre contained within a particular country, quite the opposite its extremely catchy rhythm tends to cross every border. Today Cumbia is rapidly catching on all over America, influencing new musical genres. A phenomenon that could not pass without being noticed for Colors Music, always on the look out for contemporary music forms, beyond well-known musical genres and traditional ethnic music. Jose Rizo hosts one of the finest Latin jazz radio shows (Jazz on the Latin Side) on KLON-FM in Long Beach. On January 7, 2000, a special tribute concert took place at B.B. King's in Universal City, featuring many of Los Angeles' top Afro-Cuban performers. What is particularly unusual about the release is that Rizo (who is not really a musician) wrote five of the six selections that are performed (all but "Descarga Cachao"). The songs all serve as very viable devices for the strong playing of the all-stars. Among the many soloists heard from are violinist Susie Hansen, trombonist Art Velasco, flutist Danilo Loranzo, guitarist Juan Carlos Quintero, altoist Robert Incelli, Justo Almario on tenor, the exciting trumpeter Ramon Flores, pianist Otamario Ruiz, drummer Cougar Estrada, and percussionists Alex Acuna and Francisco Aguabella. Bassist Al McKibbon and Poncho Sanchez also make appearances. Lots of joyful spirits and music are heard on this enjoyable set.
